The days when a large entry was encouraged by generous sponsorship have gone. I propose that we must take cognisance of the reduced size of many clubs and organise events accordingly.

I therefore propose the following format for 2001/2002.

OPEN
5 a side, entry fee of £20, Prizes: £400, £200 for Championship; £200, £100 for Plate.
MAJOR
5 a side. Average grading of participating players less than 160. Prizes: Championship £300, £150; Plate £150, £75.
MINOR 5 a side. Average grading of participating players less than 110. Prizes: Championship £300, £150; Plate £150, £75
RAPIDPLAY
4 a side. Two or more Zonals on same day. 4-round Swiss, with each match consisting of 4 games (not 8). Handicap as at present, mutatis mutandis. Top two teams per Zone go through to a Final on a pre-set date at a central venue where there will be either an all-play-all or a Swiss over 4 rounds. If a Union has more than 12 entries, it can organise its own Zonal. Otherwise there will be one Zone in NCCU and one in SCCU.
Prizes: £200, £100, £100, £50. The prize fund to be expanded, if need be, to ensure that all teams who qualify for Final get cash.

Note. Cyril added, at the Management Board meeting 23.6.01, that the Major and Minor would have upper grading limits of 190 and 160 in addition to the limits on average grade.

National Controller. Arbiter's qualification, or the ability to pass the arbiter's exams, is essential. Good organiser, calm personality welcome. Contactability by phone and e-mail very useful. Please apply to Director of Home Chess soonest.
