CCF CHESS CHALLENGE FINAL 2002 18th May 2002
"The Coulsdon Chess venue was almost splitting at the seams today when 106 chess mad youngsters and a number of parents converged on the venue for the 2nd annual final of the CCF Chess Challenge. Somewhere around 600 children had battled through competitions in various schools and clubs in the area to try and make it through to today's final."

U8 Girls Yasmin Kasim (Glendower)
U7 Boys Craig Whitfield (Hassell County)
[We're sorry if some of these school names mean nothing to you. They mean nothing to us either, but it's the way they were reported.]
There was a total of 44 qualifying events, at various schools and clubs. "The schools ranged in distance from Dorset up to Central London, with the majority being in Surrey (mainly Croydon Borough) and North-West Kent (Dulwich and Lewisham)." [We don't know how out-on-a-limb Dorset was.]
The winners will be invited back to a "Champion of Champions" event after the summer holidays.

BOYS' BRIGADE NATIONAL FINALS 2001-2 at Tonbridge, Saturday 18th May 2002
When they asked your Webmaster to be arbiter at the Finals, he thought "Boys Brigade what?"
It is entirely to his discredit that he had never heard of this chess competition. Its Trophy is engraved from 1980, but it goes back further than that. It's proper gradable chess, and it's not a small competition either. It is a KO organised from October each year in three separate Zones: England & Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. All of Ireland, not just Northern Ireland, so it's geographically bigger than the BCF Schools. Entries this year: England & Wales 43, Scotland 51(!), and Ireland much smaller. The Zones take it in turns to provide two qualifiers, and this year it was England & Wales's turn. The right to be Host Zone also moves around, probably keeping in step but we didn't ask. The four Finalists play semi-finals in the morning and a Final and Third-Place Play-off in the afternoon. This is a concept you'll have met before.
Matches are Rapidplay 30/30 over three boards Scheveningen, so everyone plays one game against each member of the opposing team.
We weren't sure what to expect. BB players aren't going to be by and large Club and County players, and why should they be. But this was the Finals. It was a mix, as it turned out. Some were indeed social players, who'll have got as much out of playing in it as others who scored more points. One team, which had flown in to Gatwick the night before, contained 50% of its Company's eligible members. Others were playing for blood. A different Company, more populous but not the biggest, fielded two Scottish Internationals and didn't win it.
Semi-Finals Maidstone 8 1 Dublin; Newtonhill (Aberdeen) 8 1 Nottingham. So you've guessed where the serious players were. Maidstone were the holders. Final Maidstone 5½ 3½ Newtonhill, and it went to the last game and the last few minutes. Nottingham beat Dublin in the Third Place Play-off. (We have not named these teams very precisely. Maidstone were the 1st Maidstone Company.)
We asked if the Champions go on to a further stage. The BB is a world-wide organisation, after all. Sadly not, they said. They'd have fancied a next stage in Barbados.
For more information see the Boys Brigade website.

TONBRIDGE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday 4th May 2002
Under 18/14/Parents (26 pl) 1 Raymond Gosden 148 (Whitstable CC) 5½/6; 2 Michael Marrow 117 (St Olaves GS) 5; 3 David Lettington *110s (Parent: Maidstone) 4½; 4-8 Chathu De Silva 88 (Maidstone GS), James McKeever 103 (Dartford GS), Sam Siebert 95 (these three share U14 title), Jonathan Marrow 134, Richard Cheeseman 141 (all St Olaves GS) 4; 9-10 Kenrick de Nazareth 101 (Colfes: U12), Joe Richardson 97 (Hastings: U12) 3½...
Under 12 (29 pl) 1 Jia Shen Lee 51 (Dulwich College) 6/6; 2 Yari Voropayev 64 (Dulwich College) 5; 3-6 Peter Yearsley 34 (Ditton), Chung Leung (St Olaves GS), Ross Drummond 66 (Tunbridge Wells), Alex Ludlow *65 (Eltham College) 4... Best Girls Caroline Gregory (Rochester GGS), Victoria McAulay (Bishop Challoner) 3
The U12 was for the Kent Championship, but the title was not awarded on the ground that the clear first and second places did not go to Kent players. Try telling the BCF that Dulwich College isn't in Kent. The KJCA isn't the BCF, and neither are EPSCA and the NYCA, and these things get caught up in politics. But Jia Shen Lee is Tonbridge Champion.

BCF UNDER 18 TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS at Nuneaton, 13th April 2002
Two-round jamborees, 1 hour for all moves. This was the biggest entry in recent years. Nonetheless it was very much an SCCU and Midlands affair, with just one team from East Anglia and none at all from the West and North. It's a couple of years since anyone came from the North of England, and we don't know how long since anyone did from the West.
Major (teams of 12) 1 Warwicks 18½/24; 2 Essex 17½; 3 Oxon 10½; 4 Herts 8; 5 Cambs 5½
Minor (teams of 12) 1 Surrey 19/24; 2 Kent 13½; 3 Shropshire 9; 4 Leics 6½
Major Girls (teams of 6) 1 Surrey 10/12; 2 Staffs 8; 3 Leics 0. Leicestershire, with a very inexperienced team, took the Minor title.
The designations "Major" and "Minor", made on the day, were according to mean grade of team. Surrey say they were disappointed to be Minor. It does look surprising, considering their team was pretty much the one that won the SCCU U18 title ahead of four teams deemed Major at Nuneaton.
