  • Sussex Results 2004-5
  • Open Forum again. Mike Gunn and Tim Spanton respond to David Pardoe.
  • The SCCU U14/90 Final 2004-5 is scheduled for Sunday 18th September. Entries are now being taken for 2005-6. All junior organisers should have heard from David Millward, but contact him (David.Millward@ukonline.co.uk) if you have not. Closing date 20th September.
30 Aug 2005
  • Open Forum: David Pardoe writes about the BCF's change of name, and Gary Cook responds.
  • There is already one changed date in the Fixtures page. Keep watching it.
27 Aug 2005
  • Match captains' details are now in the SCCU Fixtures page.
  • Some Grading notes
26 Aug 2005
  • SCCU County Matches: David Smith, Controller, presents the Fixture list 2005-6. It is open to amendment by agreement between match captains, but they should inform David and the Website promptly. The list of match captains is held over for a day or so in case anyone wants to object to internet publication of his details.
  • BCF Management Board meeting 25.6.05: a report. Two months late, and we're getting as bad as the BCF. The SCCU Website apologises.

10 Jul 2005
  • National Club Finals 10.7.05. We have only three of the six winners, and only two of the final match scores. More tomorrow, we hope. But, for the moment, congratulations to Wood Green, Lancaster and Newark.
09 Jul 2005
  • SCCU County matches 2005-6: entries. See brief note in the SCCU page.
  • Counties Finals 2.7 05. We now report, in full, all the Finals whether they had SCCU involvement or not. We weren't going to, but they are not yet on the BCF site and their webmaster is on holiday for a fortnight. We have our results straight from Cyril Johnson the Controller, so any mistakes will be ours.

12 Jun 2005

  • National Club. Played yesterday: the other Major Plate Semi-final. And, today, a Minor Semi-final. Both matches were all-SCCU.
11 Jun 2005
  • National Club. Played today: another all-SCCU Semi-final, this time in the Major Plate.
  • Open Semi-final 11.6.05 Lancs beat Kent. No details.
  • Minor Semi-finals 11.6.05 (bare match scores) Surrey 7½ 8½ Norfolk; Derbys 8½ 7½ Suffolk

  • U100 Semi-final 11.6.05 (bare match score) Lancs 5½ 6½ Essex
  • It continues to look like a not very good season for SCCU teams. Your Webmaster may have it wrong - correct him if he has - but he thinks we cannot have more than two teams in the Finals. Essex have made it in the U100. They may be joined by Middx in the U125, whose SF result is not known yet.
04 Jun 2005
  • National Club. Played today: another Finalist emerges, this time in the Minor Plate. The Semi-final was an all-SCCU affair.
02 Jun 2005
  • U175 Quarter-final 22.5.05 Leics 10 6 Middx
01 Jun 2005
28 May 2005
  • National Club (played today). The other Major Semi-final. This eliminates the last foreigner in the Major, and the SCCU will at least win one title this year. Both Finalists are from the same County, as it happens.
David Sedgwick points out that the SCCU will win at least two titles this year. The NC Open Finalists are also both SCCU teams.
  • National Club (played don't know when). A belated result, all-SCCU, in the Minor Quarter-finals.
25 May 2005
  • Counties Quarter-finals. We have filled in all the non-SCCU results for the weekend. There is only one SCCU result not yet published in full. This is Middx's U175 match. We understand it was actually Leics 10 6 Middx and not as originally reported. Let's be hearing from you, Middx.
Somerset defaulted two quarter-finals out of three. In the third, they defaulted seven boards out of 16. It is said that all three teams had the same match captain.
24 May 2005
  • Open Quarter-final 21.5.05 Lancs 10 6 Sussex
  • U125 Quarter-final 22.5.05 Norfolk 6 10 Middx
  • U100 21.5.05 Somerset defaulted to Essex, having apparently raised three players.
23 May 2005
  • Open Quarter-final 21.5.05 Warwicks 8½ 7½ Herts
  • Minor Counties Quarter-final 21.5.05 Surrey 13½ 2½ Hants
  • U175 Quarter-final 22.5.05 Essex 8 8 *Cambs. Also (bare match score) Leics 9½ 6½ Middx
  • U150 Quarter-finals 21.5.05 Notts 9 7 Herts; 22.5.05 Essex 7 9 Lancs
  • U125 Quarter-final 21.5.05 Herts 6½ 9½ Salop
It's not looking like a good weekend for SCCU teams.
  • National Club Major: our first semi-final result. Two SCCU teams in it, and we promise you one of them won.
  • Kent Finals Day 22.5.05
22 May 2005
  • Minor Counties Quarter-final 21.5.05 (bare match score) Surrey 13½ 2½ Hants

16 May 2005
  • Open Quarter-final 14.5.05 Kent 12 4 Shropshire
  • U175 Quarter-final 14.5.05 Lancs* 8 8 Sussex.
  • Cyril Johnson, National Controller of the above, announces that he will stand down from that post at the end of the season.
  • Golders Green Rapidplay 14.5.05
  • South Norwood Rapidplay 14.5.05
11 May 2005
08 May 2005

04 May 2005
  • U125 Preliminary round 23.4.05 Durham 7 9 Middx

  • National Club Major: the Semi-final pairings. Minor: final results in the Quarter-finals, except for the match not played yet, plus Semi-final pairings.
30 Apr 2005
  • National Club Major: the last two results in the Plate Quarter-finals. Three SCCU teams involved. We think this brings the Major Quarter-finals to a close. Also Minor Championship (results lag): one non-SCCU Quarter-final result
29 Apr 2005
  • BCF Schools is now down to the last four in both Plate and Championship, save for a Quarter-final match which is subject to appeal.
25 Apr 2005
  • U100 Preliminary round 23.4.05 Essex 10 2 Worcestershire
  • U125 Preliminary round 23.4.05 (bare match score) Durham 7 9 Middx
  • National Club Handicap Rapidplay 24.4.05
  • National Club Major Plate: An SCCU success in the Quarter-finals
  • BCF Council meeting 23.4.05: a report. This is not an authorised SCCU report, still less the Minutes. It is your Webmaster's personal account of the meeting. He will welcome observations and corrections, and his account is fluid.
  • Open Forum. Stewart Reuben on the En Passant Café (see 1st & 2nd April)
24 Apr 2005
  • U100 Preliminary round 23.4.05 (bare match score) Essex 10 2 Worcestershire
  • National Club Minor quarter-final. One all-SCCU result
19 Apr 2005
  • BCF Schools. Four more quarter-final results, sadly not SCCU-friendly in the inter-Union encounters
  • National Club Open. One more result. Ilford have qualified for the Final.
18 Apr 2005
17 Apr 2005
  • U14/90 16.4.05 Herts 5½ 18½ Oxon; 17.4.05 Kent 14 10 Sussex.
Oxon take Northern Zone, Kent take South-Eastern Zone. This concludes the local Zones, and the Finalists (by our reckoning) are Oxon, Kent, Surrey and Coulsdon.
16 Apr 2005
13 Apr 2005
12 Apr 2005
  • We think the BCF-Stage draw in the Counties Championships is now complete. The stragglers were S2 in the Minor, who eventually never materialised. A brief note says why.
11 Apr 2005
03 Apr 2005
  • National Club Major. A Quarter-Final result, with successful SCCU ingredient
  • Open Forum. Mike Gunn responds on the chess café
02 Apr 2005
  • National Club Minor. Our first Quarter-Final result, with (successful) SCCU ingredient
01 Apr 2005
  • Open Forum. Chris Rice, his historical appetite clearly whetted, seeks information about a 1960s chess café. This is not about Greater Manchester.
  • We add an update to our November coverage of the FIDE Laws taking effect 1.7.05
31 Mar 2005
30 Mar 2005
  • U100 19.3.05 (update) Essex 6 6 Surrey. Surrey draw claim fails, Essex take second nomination.
29 Mar 2005
28 Mar 2005
  • We have revised the BCF-Stage draw for the Counties Championships, in line with the Controller's letter of 24.3.05 to match captains. Two or three nominees have changed, and differ from those published earlier (and still showing) on the BCF website. But all appear to be in, except for S2 in the Minor and U100 which are both expected shortly.
23 Mar 2005
  • Open Forum. Chris Rice has some more thoughts about Greater Manchester
22 Mar 2005
21 Mar 2005
20 Mar 2005
  • U100 19.3.05 Middx 5 7 Kent; Essex 5 6 Surrey (with one game undecided - see yesterday)
  • Golders Green Rapidplay 19.3.05
  • Open Forum. Jack Rudd of Somerset fills in a query raised by Chris Rice. Then Cyril Johnson (BCF Home Director, and responsible for the competition) writes to the Forum, and there is a new development. Don't skip the footnote.
19 Mar 2005
  • U100 19.3.05 (bare match scores) Middx 5 7 Kent; Essex 5 6 Surrey with - now of all times - one QPF draw claim. By Surrey, of course, so the match is undecided. And a nomination with it: one of them must tie with Kent for first place. But the championship at least is decided, for Kent have a winning tie-break score against either.
  • Open Forum. Another historical footnote from Paul Buswell, in answer to a question by Mick Norris
18 Mar 2005
  • Open Forum. Graham Stuart of Hampshire replies to Chris Rice, Chris Rice responds, Paul Buswell adds a historical footnote, and Mick Norris of Gtr Manchester updates us on the current situation. Neil Graham of MCCU makes a point which we don't understand.

12 Mar 2005
  • U175 12.3.05 (bare match score) Sussex 8 8 Essex. Essex retain title.
09 Mar 2005
  • U14/90 5.3.05 Sussex 9 15 Kent
  • National Club Minor. All the eighth-final results and the quarter-final draw
  • BCF Schools. Another SCCU success
  • We have just learnt that the final version of the new FIDE Laws (taking effect 1.7.05) has been downloadable from the FIDE website for the last six days. So we downloaded it. Startlingly, a new rule introduced in the original version has disappeared. This is the innovation which occupied us so much in November (click here if you're interested in what we said at the time, and we labelled it Change 5). We cannot say, without further checking, whether there are other modifications of substance.
08 Mar 2005
  • Counties Championships. We have just done a major update of the BCF-Stage draw, largely following the BCF site's version. There are a couple of oddities in it, which we comment on.
06 Mar 2005
  • Open 5.3.05 Sussex 6 10 Kent. Kent retain Championship.
  • U150 5.3.05 Kent 8 7 Middx; Sussex 6½ 9½ Herts; Essex 6 10 Surrey
  • This concludes the SCCU Open and U150 competitions. The finishing order in both, if our sums are right, is in the League Tables page.

  • U150 5.3.05 (bare match score) Essex 6 10 Surrey

01 Mar 2005
24 Feb 2005
  • BCF Schools: first national-stage result of the season. We don't promise to put these in What's New (date on front page is a guide). But since it's the first, and it's an SCCU one...

  • U150 5.2.05 Herts 4½ 11½ Kent; Middx 6½ 9½ Essex
  • It's already possible to make guesses (sometimes better than that) about the finishing order in the various divisions. The League Tables page has a few observations about Open and Minor nominations for the BCF Stage.
  • We are asked to draw the attention of parents and Junior organisers to an important BCF Selection/Training tournament 26-27 March 2005 in Derbyshire.
