ECF NATIONAL SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP
2006-7

The competition has an age handicap. The older team, to win, must finish ahead by a number of points at least equal to the age difference in years (taken as an integer by truncation, and with a maximum value of 4). Teams winning on age handicap (or on board count if there is no handicap) are marked by an asterisk. Failing an asterisk, the team with more points is the winner.
For full details on scoring, see the Rules of the Competition.

HOW WENT THE SEASON?
The competition in its 50th year got off to a start in October with 93 teams. This was equal to last year, and a pale reflection of the numbers achieved in the seventies and eighties. The standard of play has not diminished. The Zone winners and Runners-up, who emerged in February, were as strong as ever. The National stage produced its surprises, in both Championship and Plate, and some favoured teams fell by the wayside.
The Finals, for the last four in each competition as always, were held at the splendid venue of Uppingham School on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th July 2007. David Welch, ECF Chief Arbiter, officiated (again, as always).
Few would have predicted that a primary school would be there. Aughton St Michaels from Ormskirk played in the Plate and were, in fact, the first primary school ever to make the Finals. Natalie Cass aged 8 may have been the youngest ever player, and she scored one win out of two. Aughton avoided whitewash but could not quite score well enough in either round to make the age handicap tell. Monmouth School took the Plate for the second year running, not without alarms on the way, and only beat King Edwards Birmingham on board count in the Final. QE Barnet, having lost heavily to King Edwards in the semi-final, won by the same score against Aughton to finish third.
The Championship produced some remarkably close matches. RGS Guildford were the only team to score a heavy win, agsinst Magdalen College School in the semi-finals. Favourites Nottingham HS in the meantime were making heavy weather of their match with Manchester Grammar School, but just emerged in front. The play-off between Magdalen College School and Manchester Grammar was the second board-count win in the two days, just going to Magdalen College School. The Final went to the wire. Nottingham High School, needing a win in the last game to finish, were perhaps fortunate when the Guildford player blundered. This was Nottingham's third successive win, equalling the record held jointly by St Pauls School (1980s) and Manchester Grammar School (1990s). Nottingham's 2006-7 team was Ankush Khandelwal, Kishan Lakhani, Michael Keetley, Oliver Exton, Jonathan Day and Daniel Lin.

A summary follows. For detailed match results in the National Stage, see Detailed match results.
