NATIONAL CLUB 2009-10

Our thanks for nearly all of the Minor info to Controller Mike McNaughton who has been coaxed out of retirement; and for some of the Major info to Julie Johnson. But we rely heavily on up-to-date news and results direct from the clubs. Thank you Alasdair, Chris, Chris, David, David, Douglas, John, Paul, Richard, Roger and Shaun (so far).

We give the mean grade limits, since they've changed. So have some of the names. The Minor (U125 as was) is now the Intermediate U145, and the U100 (now U120) has taken over the name of Minor.

Note 19.6.10: Finals
The Finals (11th July 2010) are again split between Golden Lane and Syston. To see which is where, see the section details below. Two semi-finals are not yet played, and we infer the result of another from the identities of the finalists named by the Controller.
There is, of course, no Open Final. We had supposed that the third match in the all-play-all competition would be at Golden Lane alongside most of the Finals, as it was last year. Not so. The Maidstone CC website reports that it was played on 27th June. Result below.

OPEN
3 entries (3 last year)
We are informed by Mushrooms that they are to play matches against Maidstone and Wood Green. While we cannot exclude the possibility that three teams in Cumbria are also playing a mini-league, with a view to a Final between the winners, we think on the whole it's more likely that this year is a repeat of last. A single-round league for the usual suspects. Update 5.3.10. We see from the Mushrooms website that the Cumbria teams were only a pleasing fantasy. This year is a repeat of last.
     The results:
Mushrooms 3 3 Maidstone; Mushrooms 1½ 4½ Wood Green; Wood Green 4 2 Maidstone.
So 1 Wood Green; 2 Maidstone; 3 Mushrooms. We don't know the scores. It's clear that Wood Green have 2/2, but we don't know how Maidstone and Mushrooms split the other match point between them. Either they shared it equally or Maidstone took all of it, depending whether board count applied. We can't find that the ECF ever said. We were hoping it would be critical for 2nd place so we could find out. No such luck: if Maidstone aren't 2nd on match points they are 2nd on game points anyway. Next year, maybe.

INTERMEDIATE U145
11 entries (16 last year)
Round 1 (by 31st January) Hackney 1 3 Maidstone; Bedford 3½ ½ St Albans; Newark 2½ 1½ Wanstead & Woodford; Bushbury 1½ 2½ Rushall; Cosham* 2 2 Dorking; bye Snodland. We originally invented a further match between late entrants: Alwoodley beat Barton (on Humber?). Our surmise was justified only by the sudden appearance of these teams in later rounds. We learn 13.6.10 that it was correct, and that the score was Alwoodley* 2 2 Barton on Humber.

Semi-finals (by 31st May) Snodland 3 1 Cosham; Alwoodley 1 3 Bedford
Final at Golden Lane: Bedford 3½ ½ Snodland
