UNGRADED PLAYERS
CLEARED FOR SCCU COUNTY MATCHES

2011-2012

Here is the list to date of ungraded players cleared to play for their County in the 2011-12 Counties Championship. The list will be continuously updated.

Match Captains, especially those newly appointed for the coming season, are reminded that the grading-limited divisions are for players with a current (that is, August 2011) published Standardplay grade appropriate for the division in which they are to appear. Players without a published grade may play, but only if cleared in advance with David Smith, County Match Controller, by their match captain. Captains must give as much information as possible, including details of previous grades and recent results as known. Reasonable notice is needed so the Controller can make an informed decision.

Clearance to play for (say) an U120 team will be taken as clearance to play for higher teams as well.

The estimated grades shown have come largely from the match captains, and are for information only. They have no official significance and must not be taken as determining a player's position in the team. A captain may revise his estimate (this would not be indicated below) and must cease to use a player, clearance notwithstanding, if he comes to think that the player's strength is above the limit for the division. This is an important difference between clearance and estimates on the one hand, and published grades on the other. A player with a published grade below the limit for a division may play whatever his strength.

The Controller may withdraw clearance if he ceases to think it justified. He gives notice that clearance becomes void if the player acquires a published grade in the new January list. January grades do not supersede published August grades, but they supersede estimates and clearance.

January Grades: note 3.2.12. With the appearance of the January ECF grades, nearly half of the cleared players now have published grades which supersede their clearance. Their new grades are shown in the right-hand column below. In most cases the new grade merely confirms the player's eligibility, and he may now play as a graded player in his own right. However, in four cases (highlighted in red) the new grade is over the limit. These players are eligible for higher divisions as regular graded players, but they may no longer play in the divisions for which clearance was granted. An exception has been made for Geoff Steele in his next U120 match, which is tomorrow. He is booked to play, and the Controller does not feel he should be excluded at such short notice. He is excluded thereafter.
In the remaining cases, the player still has no Standard grade and his clearance remains valid unless and until the Controller withdraws it. He has, in fact, decided to withdraw it in the case of one player (also highlighted in red) who has no Standard record at all, but a Rapid grade (X Category) which is now firmly over the limit. This player is granted clearance for the next division up. Further note 4.2.12: the last two sentences have been revised. We yesterday named a second player for whom clearance had been withdrawn. The Controller has revised his judgment on this case, and clearance is restored.
You are reminded that players who had published grades in August are not affected by the new grades. Their August grades remain valid for eligibility purposes even if the January grade takes them over (or under) a limit.
