* U180: 11.9.15. Kent have withdrawn for want of a captain. The remaining teams are to decide by 19th September whether to switch to double round.
20.9.15. They have decided, by a 3-1 majority, to stick to the single-round fixtures already arranged. (The rule for four teams is, of course, double-round if you know there are four teams to start with.)

In the fixtures below, the home team is named first. If captains change any fixtures by agreement, they must inform the County Match Controller and Webmaster promptly. Where a match is re-arranged, the new fixture will be asterisked in red. The original, supplanted, fixture will be placed in round brackets.
Detailed results must go to both CMC and Webmaster. Email is fine.

NOTES TO MATCH CAPTAINS

See also, provided separately:
Guidance for Match Captains, which is largely concerned with administrative arrangements and a captain's rights and duties during a match.
Increments and digital Clocks. Some notes on incremental rates of play.

SOME THOUGHTS ON VENUES
by the County Match Controller
Whilst it is impossible to lay down hard and fast rules concerning the venues in which matches are played, there are a number of principles to which I feel that Counties should try to adhere. Most of them are just common sense but, at the risk of stating the obvious, here are a few observations.
     Start times
There are no “Rules” governing the times that matches should start. For many years SCCU Matches invariably started at 2.00pm but of late some Counties have started to vary this for a variety of reasons; in my view no matches should start earlier than 1.00pm and obviously confirmation of ALL start times MUST be included with the mandatory notice giving all the required details one month before the match itself.
     Location
Not everyone has a car. Venues need to be located in reasonably accessible places, well served by public transport, eg trains and buses. It is very helpful for match captains to provide details of convenient connections serving the venue prior to the match. For those lucky enough to travel by car, details of convenient car parks are useful, particularly those that will not cost an "arm and a leg" for the 5 hours required. Match captains should also advise whether adjacent “on street” parking is available during the course of the match.
     Venue
Ideal venues are hard to come by. Essentials are to provide sufficient space for the match(es) taking place (with room to walk around when required) with good lighting and convenient conveniences. Access for the disabled is an area of growing importance and Counties should do all in their power to use only fully accessible venues. It would be sensible for “away” match captains to advise the “home” MC in advance should their team include players with disabilities, including blind players.
     Refreshments
Bearing in mind that many teams will have travelled considerable distances, some form of refreshment is an essential courtesy to opponents. Tea, coffee and soft drinks can be provided at minimal cost to the home side. Other light refreshments could be provided by the venue for purchase as required. Details of adjacent cafes and pubs for pre-match meals etc are also very useful for the visiting teams.

May I ask all Counties to review their arrangements in order to ensure that a County Chess match is a pleasant day out for all concerned and not a chore to be endured.
Best wishes to all for the coming season.
David Smith
County Match Controller

Player qualification
Players must be qualified by birth, residence or otherwise. For this purpose the SCCU uses the ECF Counties Championship Rule (currently at http://www.englishchess.org.uk/?page_id=20317, but it moves around).

Contacting opponents
Remember that the home captain should contact the away captain to confirm arrangements at least one month in advance (or two weeks, for matches played before 13th October).

Match results
Result sheets must reach DS within one week of the match, and should also be sent promptly to the Website/Bulletin for publication.

Grades, Eligibility and Team Order
Eligibility for the grading-limited divisions is based on August grades throughout the season, except for ungraded players (see below). Remember that team order is based not on grade but on order of playing strength as determined by the match captain.

Ungraded players
In the grading-limited divisions, players without a current grade may play only if cleared with DS in advance. You should first check with your local grader, who may have information that's not available to you. Players cleared so far will be listed here.
Match captains are advised to check their opponents' grades. Occasionally an ungraded player, instead of being cleared with the Controller, is simply included in the team and quoted with a non-existent grade. This may be a previous-season grade (not admissible) or simply an unofficial estimate. Such offences will be penalised.

January Grades
Remember that January grades are not used for eligibility purposes, save for players who had no August grade. Clearance granted to ungraded players will lapse if they acquire a January grade.

Mobile phones
Whilst the SCCU recognises that is not practicable to ban mobile phones from the playing area (or venue) nevertheless our County Match Rules now make it clear that if a player’s phone makes any sound whilst his game is in progress, the player receives, on the first ring, a warning. A second offence results in automatic loss of the game.

Quickplay finishes
Quickplay finishes do not apply if you are using digital clocks with increments. If you are not, the SCCU uses the FIDE Quickplay Finish rules (Appendix G), which are available on this site. Note G.6 at the bottom, for QPFs where no arbiter is present. If no arbiter is present, then in the event of a claim you STOP PLAYING and submit the position to DS.

Website
Your Webmaster would add: Please send all your result sheets to the Website, even if you're sure your opponents will. I need both copies as a check. Try to be prompt. Email's best. Give grade and forename for all players, and please be legible if writing by hand. Accuracy is important because the grader works directly from the website. If a player has no grade, you may wish to give an estimate. In this case be sure to mark it "e" (not "E") so that it cannot be taken for a real grade. That would cause confusion.
If a player has just moved into your county, or hasn't played county chess before, add a note first time round saying where he's from. ECF grading code is helpful too, and if he hasn't got one say so. No need for codes generally, unless you think confusion's possible.
