THE HERTS CENTENARY MATCH
Herts v Rest of SCCU at County Hall, Hertford, 30th September 2000
The splendid venue came free of charge, through the generosity of Hertfordshire County Council. Excellent playing conditions, lovely setting, but TOO EASY TO FIND. This confused your Webmaster no end. There was a bar, though. The refreshments were a big plus, and the staff called you "sir". (No women played. Not sure what they called the children, but there were some, including three girls.)
Double round, same opponent both times, Rapidplay (all moves in 60 minutes). Herts had white on odd in round 1 and black on odd in round 2. There were also four five-minute games at the end, on the top four boards. This was to bring the number of games up to (in fact over) the 100 mark. It had been planned as a 50-board match, but there were three double defaults. The five-minute games, as it turned out, turned a drawn match into an SCCU win. If you think the board order looks a bit odd in places, it's mostly because they were using last year's grades (Standardplay) and we've given the new ones. The event will not be graded, unfortunately. That's what they told us when we asked afterwards.
We've given County affiliations, for the SCCU side. Some Counties were much more heavily represented than others. Hampshire have returned to the fold with their U14 team, and lots of Hants juniors turned out. We had no need of "H" to mean Herts, so it was available for Hants and that's how you should read it.
In places we've had difficulty identifying players. Some of the grades supplied appeared to be not so much last year's as imaginary, some of the Counties given were dubious, and one of the Hampshire surnames had three spelling mistakes in it. Where we really couldn't identify someone, we've said. If we've got other people wrong, please tell us.
