Congratulations to Cambs on regaining their title, in the face of sterling resistance from a Sussex team not noticeably different from the one that turned out all through the season in the SCCU stage. Sussex I is among the most consistent of teams, in terms of player loyalty.

Yes, we really got this result from both sides.
1 Bd 7: Brackets Yorkshire's. A Yorks footnote, referring most likely to this player, says "Yorkshire grade". He isn't in the BCF master list.

The Greater Manchester team order has excited comment elsewhere on this page as well as in Open Forum. But no one would begrudge them their convincing victory.

"The apparently higgledy-piggledy order of the Manchester team was due to the late arrival of their captain. A member of his team produced a note with a team list which turned out to be not what he actually wanted...."
That's given rise to some correspondence in Open Forum. Then the (regular) Sussex captain tells us 26.9.01, only three and three-quarter months late, that we have the Sussex order wrong on boards 8-10. His stand-in had it wrong as well, then. We have moved Mr Williams down two boards as requested, with consequent upshuffling for Stone and Kington. There seems to be no disagreement about the results on those boards, it's just that different people have got them now.

John Philpott fills us in. "An extremely pleasant village within five minutes of Junction 10 to the M11. It admirably fulfilled the criterion of being close to the border between the two Counties referred to in Neville Belinfante's letter of yesterday to Open Forum. Indeed for at least three members of the Essex team from the Metropolitan end of the County considerably easier to get to than Maldon where the Essex U150s staged their home matches this season."

Bds 3, 5: Lancs claim draws on ground that opponent cannot win by normal means. On 5 they have B v N + P. 3 is 6K1/6P1/7k/3Q4/5q2/8/8/8: White (Surrey) to move, and Lancs have submitted lengthy computer analysis demonstrating a draw. (If they think it takes lengthy computer analysis, isn't that close to an admission that it's winnable by normal means?)
27.5.01. So we thought. In fact both positions came back as draws. Board 3 did look drawn, and the computer was probably an irrelevance. It's just that it was possible for Black to go wrong. It was the sort of position where an on-the-spot arbiter would probably have said "draw" as soon as Black had demonstrated that he wasn't going to go wrong. But that's a "making no progress" claim, and this wasn't one. We conclude that the arbiter thought Black's correct defence so obvious as not to need demonstrating.

Cleveland seem to have supplied no grades for the Final. The Cleveland Secretary, once more called into action, confirms that the ones we looked up seem to be right. He also confirms two amendments to names which the captain got wrong.

Board 7: Essex score this as a win for both sides. We print 0-1 because it fits the totals given, but can't vouch for it.
We've not actually looked for Church Hall on our road map. We have "corrected" two of the Essex names, and the Cleveland Secretary has helped 18.6.01 with some of the Cleveland ones we'd had trouble with. He has not queried our board-7 score so we guess it's right.
1 Said to be R Perrett of Middlesbrough, graded probably 58. No R Perrett found, but there is a C Perrett of Middlesbrough with that grade.
John Philpott and the Cleveland Secretary inform us that Church Hall is a locality in Syston.

1 Bd 1. Originally given as Broadley. This was our best attempt at a name not entirely clear in the Essex captain's result sheet. We have now heard from Kevin Williamson, Beds match captain, saying it's Botteley. He should know, and we thank him.

Some notes, migrated from further up the page.

23.3.01: Essex U175 had been drawn against E2 in the Quarter Final. But there wasn't an E2. Cambridgeshire, who were going to be E2, had been promoted to E1 replacing Bedfordshire who decided not to proceed. There was no one to replace Cambridgeshire because Cambridgeshire came bottom.
Yes, EACU is the Union that gets to nominate a team that came bottom. They actually didn't have an U175 qualifying competition. Their U175 nominees came from the Open competition. There were four teams in it, and everybody got a prize. Top two got Minor nominations, bottom two U175. This was simply illegal. The only way a Union can get two qualifiers is to hold a competition. No reason why it shouldn't be incorporated in something else, but the fact remains that teams that come bottom in it can't qualify. As it's worked out, everything's legal again. Any Union can make one nomination. Cambs never came bottom, because there wasn't an U175 event.

A Note about Northerners. The NCCU qualifying competition was a match between Yorkshire and Lancashire. Yorks won 9-7. These two were also the only NCCU entrants at U175 and U150. In the U125 and U100 the Northern entries were a respectable 6 and 5.

Note 1.4.01. It has just been announced that the Finals, previously 7th July, are brought forward by one week to allow the Times Finals to be played at the same venue. We have no word yet of a changed date for the Semi Finals.
Note 2.4.01. Oh dear, this seems to have been a hoax. The Finals are on the 7th July.
