COUNTY MATCHES
BCF STAGE 2002

Preliminary Round 20th April
Quarter-finals 11th May
Semi-finals 15th June
Finals 6th July at Rushey Mead School, Leicester

OVERVIEW OF RESULTS
The competition is complete. We have all the results, often as bare match scores only. Matches in red are given in full further down (click on the section headings). Matches in blue are not. With one exception, they are matches without SCCU involvement. Some of the blue semi-finals appear in full on the BCF site.
Open
Quarter-finals Yorks (?N1) 8 8 *Essex (S3); Lancs (?N2) 7½ 8½ Warwicks (M2); Gtr Manchester (M1) 6½ 9½ Sussex (S2); Kent (S1) w/o scr Leics (M3) Leics were missing 4 of their top 5 players. That makes two years running they've defaulted their first match in the Open. Must be costing them a packet in £50 fines. Note 15.5.02: we hear it's not. The Controller doesn't impose the fine. He authorises opponents' expenses if they're out of pocket.
Semi-finals Essex (S3) 9 7 Sussex (S2); Warwicks (M2) 5½ 10½ Kent (S1)
Final Essex (S3) 9 7 Kent (S1)

U150
Preliminary Round (A) Norfolk (E2) 11 5 Notts (M3); (B) Yorks (N2) 9 7 Gtr Manchester (M2). Your Webmaster does not know why there was an N2. As far as he can see, NCCU did not have three teams completing their fixtures.
Quarter-finals Essex (S1) 8½ 7½ Yorks (N2); Lancs (N1) 11 5 Norfolk (E2); Devon (W) scr w/o Cambs (E1); Warwicks (M1) 9½ 6½ Sussex (S2)

Semi-finals Kent (S2) 7 5 Surrey (S1); Lancs (N1) 4 8 Merseyside (N2)
Final Kent (S2) 8½ 3½ Merseyside (N2)

In each case the Semi-finals were A v C and B v D, where A, B, C and D are the Quarter-final winners reading from left to right.

Kent were missing their top two from the semi-final. Three Essex players (plus one from the U175) broke down on the M1 and took a taxi to Leicester from Newport Pagnall. The Essex Treasurer's reaction is not recorded.

1 Bd 6. Alleged by players on both sides to be called Chris, around 200 strength. There is a Chris Shepherd (not Shephard) *192 listed as coming from Sheffield near Warwicks. Well, from down here it's near Warwicks. Just thought you'd like to know. Kevin Thurlow Kevin.Thurlow@lgc.co.uk adds 8.7.02: "There is a Chris Shephard in Warwicks (I believe) - I played him in 4NCL when he played for Warwicks Select. And he's a monstrously good postal player (2525!)."
Kent mc: "The bare result of this match does not tell the story of this unusual day. To begin with, the nightmare scenario of England qualifying in second place from the Group of Death (so clashing with the Semi-Final that was heavily discussed on the SCCU Website Open Forum) actually happened. Warwickshire put in a request to delay the start of the semi-final till the end of normal time in the England-Denmark match. However when I asked if there would be a further delay if it went to the Golden Goal and penalties I was informed that any further delay would mean our match finishing too late. Therefore I had to ring up my contact, Paul Habershon, at Bedford Modern School who magnificently came to the rescue and arranged a TV for us so that if extra time had to be played the players could at least nip in and out between moves..."

Essex won on board count. (Well, it was a very convincing win on board count. Its symmetry was something else. That must be very rare.)

"The unusual board order of the Herts team is explained by the fact that half of them (incl. the captain) were delayed by up to 90 minutes by an accident which closed the M40 near Oxford; those that had arrived at the venue by other routes agreed to start the match on the top boards using the equipment provided by Glos; the delayed players then occupied the remaining boards when they & the Herts equipment arrived."
(We've a feeling crossed wires and motorway lag came into it somewhere as well.)

Bds 15 and 16 conceded in advance.
1 Bds 4, 7. Richard C and Robert, in that order. Same club. We looked them up, unsure whether it was an error. If the Warwicks captain really called them both R Reynolds he wants shooting.

Note 24.3.02: MCCU nominations
The MCCU Championship Final, between Warwicks and Gtr Manchester, is not played yet. It's scheduled for 6th April, after the nominations deadline. But the nominations are already made: 1 Gtr Manchester, 2 Warwicks (and 3 Leics, who lost one of the semi-finals).
Warwicks, who had already won the Western group ahead of Gtr Manchester and beaten them in the process, may not be altogether happy about coming second. We did hear it was done by lot. However, the MCCU Controller has told us the rule. The Final doesn't count. M1 and M2 are the semi-final winners. In odd-numbered years, M1 comes from the semi-final between winner of Western group and runner-up of Eastern (and M2 from the other). Even years, other way round. If there is an M3, it is the semi-final loser with the better score. The system is not universally liked, and it will be proposed at the MCCU AGM that the BCF deadline be adjusted next year to fit the Midlands calendar.
Sorry. There really is a proposal, to the effect that the MCCU Final be played before the deadline in future. Mind you it seems to have been proposed two years ago and defeated, and the MCCU Controller opposes it.
We notice that the rule, or a similar one, has been applied in other divisions as well. It seems to be applied whether the Final has been played or not. The U100 Final has, and Warwicks beat Staffs 7½ 4½. The nominations are 1 Staffs, 2 Warwicks.
Footnote 17.6.02. The AGM has changed the rule. In future the Final counts, if it's been played. If it hasn't, MCCU1 is the semi-final winner scoring more points (with tie-break on board count/elimination).
