  • County Finals. We have published the ones with SCCU involvement, and intended (see 6th July) to publish the whole lot as we always have. But the BCF website, much improved in promptness and completeness this year, published them today and we will not duplicate its efforts.
06 Jul 2003
  • Counties Championship Finals 5.7.03 Open Kent 9 7 Lancs; Minor Counties Staffs* 8 8 Norfolk; U175 Sussex 9 7 Warwickshire; U150 Lancs 10 6 Yorks; U125 Norfolk 9½ 6½ Merseyside; U100 Lancs 7½ 4½ Somerset. • Open Forum: Chris Howell, Trevor Jones, Bernard Cafferty and Tim Spanton write about BCF Finals venues and other things.
  • SCCU U14/90 Finals 5.7.03. Sussex make it three in a row, by a whisker. 1 Sussex 13½/24; 2 (on tie-break) Oxon 13; 3 Herts 13; 4 Surrey 8½. Full details when we have them.
  • BCF Management Board meeting 28.6.03: David Smith (SCCU rep) reports. The BCF at last has a new Chief Executive, and it's someone you've heard of. It has a new Finance Manager as well.
03 Jul 2003
  • Open semi-final 14.6.03 Greater Manchester 8 8 *Kent
  • U125 quarter-final 17.5.03 Herts 7½ 8½ Merseyside
Both these results have been somewhat elusive, and as far as we know this is the first time they have been published. For U100 semi-final 14.6.03 Kent 5½ 6½ Somerset we refer you to the BCF website.
02 Jul 2003
  • The Website apologises for its week off. It's been busy.
  • National Club Finals at Wanstead 29.6.03, courtesy John Philpott. Bare match scores only, we haven't had time for the detailed results yet.
  • BCF Schools Championship Finals at Nottingham 28.6.03. Both titles go to foreigners this year.
  • Kent Schools League 2002-3: a final update. Eltham College Junior School sweep the board in the U11.
24 Jun 2003
  • National Club Minor 2001-2. It appears that last year's Final, due to be played on Sunday at Wanstead, won't be. Look at the bottom of the "Minor" section, after the April Fool. This isn't an April Fool.
22 Jun 2003
20 Jun 2003
  • SCCU AGM Tomorrow, or maybe Today if you go to bed earlier than your Webmaster does. David Smith asks us to say that he has collected a large number of Trophies for presentation, and he doesn't want to be going home with any of them. Winners: please make sure you're represented!
18 Jun 2003
  • National Club Minor Semi-finals. We received this year's results for grading yesterday, and confidently expected to be able to fill the semi-finals in. Playing deadline was 8th June, which admittedly is 8 days into the wrong season. Alas we've filled one in, and there are two still missing. We can't see that either Final is fixed yet.
17 Jun 2003
  • U175 15.6.03 Warwicks* 8 8 Essex. Essex's claim for a QPF draw has been unsuccessful.
16 Jun 2003

15 Jun 2003
  • Open 14.6.03 Lancs 9 7 Essex. Also (bare match score) Greater Manchester 8 8 *Kent: details when available.
  • U175 14.6.03 Sussex 9 7 Devon. Also (bare match score) Warwicks 7 8 Essex with one unfinished, and Essex claim a draw and if they don't get it they lose on board count. You were ahead of us.
  • U100 (bare match scores) 7.6.03 Essex 1½ 10½ Lancs; 14.6 03 Kent 5½ 6½ Somerset. Details when available. Our information on the Essex match is from Lancashire and the Controller. We are better placed on the Kent one, having heard the gory details from the Kent captain himself. Earlier editions of today's What's New?, informed by a telephone call from him shortly before the match, suggested that we weren't even sure it was going to happen. It did, but at a venue half a mile from the one Kent had been sent to. The cock-up appears to have been Somerset's.
08 Jun 2003
05 Jun 2003
  • U100 Quarter-final 24.5.03 Kent* 5½ 5½ Cheshire & N Wales
04 Jun 2003
  • SCCU AGM is 21st June 2003 at the Fountains Abbey, Praed St, Paddington, London W2 starting at 2 pm. Counties have two reps and NCMs one. The papers of the meeting aren't secret, and you can download them by clicking here. (Zipped Word and Excel, 18 KB)
03 Jun 2003
  • National Club Major: the remaining semi-final is played, and the SCCU recoups some honour. All the Finalists are known in the top two sections. Little is known of the Minor semi-finals.

  • Sussex Championship goes to Bernard Cafferty. The reference is to our County News page, but there is more detail on the Mid Sussex League site.
  • Council stuns Management Board! Game Fee goes up by more than the MB was asking for! It's 36p from September, and the amount most heavily supported (but it doesn't work that way) was 50p. Our report of today's Council meeting should appear tomorrow.
22 Apr 2003
20 Apr 2003

  • Our first result in the BCF Stage. U150 Prelim 12.4.03 Surrey 9½ 6½ Norfolk
  • And nearly our last in the SCCU U14/90 Zones: 12.4.02 Oxon 16½ 7½ Berks. All the qualifiers are known. We haven't yet heard of a date or venue for the Finals.

03 Apr 2003
01 Apr 2003
  • National Club Major: all but one of the quarter-final results, and the semi-final draw. There is also a development in the Minor.
30 Mar 2003
27 Mar 2003
  • U125 15.2.03 Herts 12 4 Kent. We said that five weeks ago, but it's really there now. No one's queried it till today.
25 Mar 2003
  • U14/90 22.3.03 Surrey 21½ 2½ MGCA; Sussex 18-6 Hants. Also 8.2.03 Hants 6 18 Sussex, and you'll have to scroll down for this one.
  • Kent U100 will be interested to know that their quarter-final opponent (NCCU1) in the BCF Stage is now Cheshire and not Yorkshire. Apparently this is due to a shock result received after the NCCU nominations were announced. We're keeping the BCF-Stage page updated as nominations come in, but how many of them you believe is up to you.
  • In the Junior page: Kent Schools League Senior Finals 25.3.03
23 Mar 2003
  • U175 22.3.03 Surrey 8 8 Middx. This concludes the SCCU stage of the Inter-Counties Championships, and we hope you'll check the Final League Tables before they find their way into the Yearbook. It's been Kent and Sussex's year, with two first places each. Our BCF-Stage nominations (top three in the Open and two everywhere else) have gone forward to the BCF but await confirmation of acceptance from the nominees.
  • U14/90 22.3.03 Bucks 12 12 Oxon
  • BCF U18 Jamborees 2002-3. It's now official. We are authorised to announce that these are on Saturday 28th June 2003 in Essex. Contact Peter Walker chesscoach@freeuk.com for details.

  • U14/90 22.3.03 (bare match score) Bucks 12 12 Oxon
  • BCF Schools Championship: we've been adding results as they've come in, and the quarter-final draw is now up.
19 Mar 2003
18 Mar 2003
  • U100 15.3.03 Essex 5½ 6½ Kent
  • Open Forum: Bernard Cafferty, we think not for the first time, laments the difficulty of travelling to County matches. Is five hours from Hastings to Bourne End a record?
  • National Club Major: An SCCU team sadly fails to emulate yesterday's achievement.
17 Mar 2003
  • Open 15.3.03 Bucks 7 9 Sussex
  • U100 15.3.03 Middx 6½ 5½ Surrey. Also (bare match score) Essex 5½ 6½ Kent
  • National Club Major: One more SCCU success against a foreigner
16 Mar 2003
  • Open 15.3.03 Essex 8 8 Herts. Also (bare match score) Bucks 7 9 Sussex
  • Herts Open captain: "Has any county team ever drawn 4, or more than half, of its league fixtures in any one season before?" We'll pass. The records are there, back to 1958 at a pinch, but does anyone happen to know?
  • U150 15.3.03 Kent 7½ 8½ Sussex; Surrey 10½ 5½ Middx
13 Mar 2003
  • U14/90 9.3.03 Richmond Juniors 7 17 Herts

08 Mar 2003
  • U125 8.3.03 Essex 5½ 9½ Herts with one double default. This completes the U125 fixtures. We make it 1 Herts, 2 Middx.
  • National Club Open: Results to date, and the semi-final draw
06 Mar 2003
  • Details, belatedly, of the SCCU Girls U18 Jamboree. You already knew it was on the 6th April alongside the U180 and U135 Jamborees. There will be an U11 Jamboree as well.
  • In the Junior page: success for an SCCU school in foreign parts.
03 Mar 2003
  • Open 1.3.03 Cambs 6½ 9½ Kent. Kent, already Champions, finish with a clean sweep on 7/7.
02 Mar 2003
  • U175 1.3.03 Surrey 11½ 4½ Sussex. Surrey's first win of the season, as emphatic as their loss to Sussex in December, and it doesn't change the positions we gave yesterday.
01 Mar 2003
  • U175 1.3.03 Essex 7½ 8½ Middx. We think that makes Sussex Champions, and Essex are second.
26 Feb 2003
  • What's New won't always mention results in the National stage of the BCF Schools Championship, though they will always appear in the BCF Schools page as they happen. There's no harm in saying the first one's through. An SCCU school progresses to the quarter-final at the expense of a Welsh one.
25 Feb 2003
  • U100 22.2.03 Surrey 7 5 Essex. With one match to go it's a three-horse race, and no one is certain of BCF nomination yet.
  • U14/90 22.2.03 Berks 7½ 16½ Oxon
24 Feb 2003
22 Feb 2003

  • U14/90 15.2.03 Middx Girls CA 1 17 Kent, in unusual circumstances and with numerous defaults, six of them double
17 Feb 2003
  • U14/90 15.2.03 Coulsdon CF 7 17 Surrey
  • National Club Major: an odd result, and the next-round draw for the Major Championship proper
16 Feb 2003
  • U125 15.2.03 Essex 6 9 Surrey
  • Just done some tidying-up in the League Tables. We've not checked with the Controller, but the top three places in the Open (and hence the SCCU nominations) seem to be decided already. So we published that, and a few hours later David Roberts observed that 1st place in the U150 was settled as well. So we looked, and concluded to our surprise that every single place in the U150 was settled. Feel free to check, and you know where the Rules are! We've added a couple of known other-Union nominees to the BCF-Stage draw. If you hear of others, say.

10 Feb 2003
  • Open 8.2.03 Essex 9½ 6½ Bucks; Sussex 9½ 6½ Oxon; Surrey 11½ 4½ Cambs. Cambridgeshire's loss means Kent are out of reach at the top and retain their SCCU title with a match to spare.

But the same email, unable to get through on ndo, has tried our Freeserve address and is now blocking that. Freeserve is harder to unblock. Go on using the ndo address.
None of this affects either of the Site's web addresses.

If you have written since then you will be queuing up behind it. Please re-send to rjh@sccu.freeserve.co.uk, and use that address until further notice.
