  • Open Forum: Tim Spanton has a new angle on Website Publication
07 Ju1 2004
  • Open Forum: Gary Cook writes in response to Chris Majer (see yesterday). Webmaster's view: Gary's right, and we all know the whole thing's silly. Write if you're a QC and bar who specialises in Data Protection, and otherwise it's probably best to leave it to the BCF. I think they're on our side.
06 Ju1 2004
  • SCCU U14/90 Finals 4.7.04

  • Open Forum: John Saunders and John Hodgson take up the Website Publication theme. We're getting emails about this with two different hats on: a journalist's, and a grader's. The journalist ones are published here, and the grader ones go to the Grading Director. It's getting hard to tell the difference.
01 Ju1 2004
  • Open Forum: Keith Selby writes about publication of grades on websites

  • BCF Schools Champions 2003-4 are Monmouth School, and the Plate Champions are Nottingham High School. The Finals were played yesterday. That link is to an overview of the season. For detailed match results, click here.
  • STOP PRESS. GAME FEE COMES DOWN. At the end of yesterday's BCF Council meeting it was announced that the Management Board has reduced next year's Game Fee (effective from 1st September 2004) from 44p to 43p. For the reasons, see the Council Report which we hope to publish tomorrow. It will say that the NCCU proposals on BCF Membership have been rejected.
  • We know we owe you an SCCU AGM Report, from seven days earlier. Sorry. Also tomorrow, with luck. It's the heavy season.

31 May 2004
28 May 2004
  • U125 Quarter-final ?8.5.04 Suffolk 6½ 9½ Middx. We believe we are now up to date with detailed SCCU matches in the National stage. Also with bare match scores for everyone else, with the exception of a single U175 quarter-final that no one seems to know anything about. Later - we do now. Thanks RDH and IMJ. Result inserted.
  • BCF Extraordinary Council Meeting, to finish off the Bristol business of 24th April, is Saturday 26th June in Nottingham. Details, for reasons which will appear, are in the SCCU page as an update to the Executive meeting of 14th May.
26 May 2004
  • National Club Open: the last semi-final result. SCCU triumphs over foreigner.
  • Kent Schools League: Results 2003-4. Your Webmaster knows that Junior results on this site tend to come from his own County. He'd be glad to publish more from other Counties.

  • We await the full details of U125 Quarter-final Suffolk-Middx. BCF site hasn't even heard the bare match score. Please, Middx, send us your win!

  • U125 Quarter-final (date not known: bare match score) Suffolk 6½ 9½ Middx
  • U100 Quarter-final (date not known: bare match score) Essex 6½ 5½ Salop
  • We pick results up where we can. Our sources are various. We have received no details of the U125 and U100 results above, and they are not apparently known to the BCF website. We appeal to SCCU match captains to send us their results direct, and in full, for publication.
13 May 2004
  • U100 Quarter-final 8.5.04 Norfolk 6½ 5½ Surrey
10 May 2004

  • National Club Major. An SCCU win against a foreigner in the Plate semi-finals.
04 May 2004
  • Minor Counties QF: Herts score an easy win against their West of England opponents. Lancashire do likewise against Suffolk. See BCF-Stage page.
  • On the subject of County matches, Cambs and Bucks have withdrawn from the SCCU Open competition 2004-5.
  • Coulsdon Rapidplay 24.4.04 and Blitz 3.5.04
02 May 2004
  • Tunbridge Wells Junior 1.5.04. (If we give Kent results for juniors it's because Kent send them. We'd gladly publish more junior results from other counties.)
30 Apr 2004
  • A couple of loose ends. National Club Open Plate: one SCCU result we could have published some time ago
  • And the BCF Schools is now down to the last four in both Championship and Plate.
27 Apr 2004
  • Very brief reports of BCF Management Board meetings 20.3.04, 24.4.04. Yesterday's Council report has changed, of course.
26 Apr 2004
  • BCF Council meeting 24.4.04: a report. It goes without saying that this is the SCCU's report and not the BCF's. We hope to add a Management Board report tomorrow.
We should say that SCCU reports are far more irresponsible than BCF ones. The BCF won't publish a report until it's been agreed and verified to the nth degree, and it takes months. The SCCU goes gaily ahead and publishes two days after the meeting, and amends as the complaints come in. The complaints invariably dry up within a week.
21 Apr 2004
  • Open Preliminary round 17.4.04 Staffs 6 10 Sussex
18 Apr 2004
13 Apr 2004
12 Apr 2004
06 Apr 2004
  • SCCU U180 and U135 Jamborees 4.4.04
  • National Club Minor. Quarter-final results and semi-final pairings
  • Our BCF Council papers (Finance meeting, 24th April in Bristol) arrived a few days ago. The Agenda includes some meaty stuff, and we have put a summary in the BCF page.
05 Apr 2004
  • National Club Major. Quarter-final results, including a new SCCU one, and the semi-final pairings
  • BCF Schools quarter-finals are now complete, as far as the Championship proper is concerned. There will be some new faces at the Finals this year.
04 Apr 2004
  • SCCU Jamborees 4.4.04. U180 (five teams) 1 North Circular League 6½/10; 2 Surrey 5½; 3-4 Essex, Sussex 5; 5 Middx 3. U135 (three teams) 1 North Circular League 4/6; 2-3 Essex, Surrey 2½. Detailed results expected shortly.
  • Open Forum. Jonathan Melsom has a suggestion for relieving BCF financial problems.
  • National Club: two results from today. An SCCU one in the Major, and a foreign one in the Minor
28 Mar 2004
  • U14/90 27.3.04 Bucks 6½ 17½ Oxon; Bucks 8½ 15½ Oxon (two matches head to tail). This concludes the local groups, and the four qualifiers if our arithmetic's right are Essex, Oxon, Richmond Juniors and Sussex.
27 Mar 2004
  • U14/90 27.3.04 Essex 12½ 11½ Herts. The third group ends with a remarkably close finish.
25 Mar 2004
  • So why has the date on the front page changed two days running, and nothing here? Mostly because of BCF Schools Championship results. The quarter-finals are well under way. Today we also have a new (all-SCCU) result in the National Club Open. Keep an eye on the BCF-Stage county pairings; they may be updated in silence.
22 Mar 2004
  • U150 20.3.04 Kent 8 8 Surrey
  • U14/90 14.3.04 Richmond Juniors 22  2 Coulsdon CF. (Scroll down one match.) We now have two qualifiers for the Finals, and the others are expected to emerge shortly.
21 Mar 2004
  • U150 20.3.04 Essex 11 5 Sussex; Middx 9 7 Herts. Also (bare match score) Kent 8 8 Surrey. This leads to an entertaining triple tie in the bottom half of the table. The league tables are now complete, barring errors.
  • National Club Minor: one all-SCCU result
20 Mar 2004
  • U14/90 20.3.04 Surrey Girls 8 16 Sussex
17 Mar 2004
16 Mar 2004
  • BCF Schools Championship: Quarter-final pairings. All first-round results are in, save for one match which should be played tomorrow.
15 Mar 2004
14 Mar 2004
  • Open 13.3.04 Bucks 5 11 Herts. This completes the fixtures.
  • U125 13.3.04 Herts 7½ 8½ Essex, Surrey 8½ 7½ Middx. This completes the fixtures. Now all that remains is next week's U150 matches.
  • U14/90 6.3.04 Herts 14 10 Essex
  • Golders Green Rapidplay 13.3.04
13 Mar 2004
  • Open 13.3.04 Surrey 6½ 9½ Essex. This seems to resolve all the positions.
  • Open Forum, and still not (well, mostly not) about match captains. Jonathan Melsom responds to Kevin Thurlow.
11 Mar 2004
  • Open 13.3.04 Sussex-Cambs: Cambs have defaulted. Their match captain is apologetic, and recognises that the future of Cambridgeshire in this competition is in doubt considering their unpredictable variations in strength from one season to another.
  • Open Forum, and not about match captains. Kevin Thurlow returns to a point raised in December.
  • We have slightly updated the Counties BCF-Stage page to show some of the qualifying teams. If you know others that we don't, please say.
10 Mar 2004
  • U14/90 (?)6/7.3.04 Hampshire 4 20 Richmond Juniors
09 Mar 2004
  • U14/90 6.3.04 Sussex 14 10 Surrey Girls
  • Lee (Kent) Junior 6th March 2004
  • Open Forum. The match-captain theme gathers fresh pace with contributions from Nick Butland and Kevin Thurlow (who actually knows a competition with written guidelines about it). Don't be put off by our 50-move remark of the week before last. If you have new things to say, say them.
08 Mar 2004
  • Open Forum. The match-captain theme resurfaces (Jeff Goldberg), and Neill Cooper writes about something else!
  • U175. Note that Daniel Hirsch is back in harness as Sussex U175 match captain. His details are again in the Fixtures page.
07 Mar 2004
  • U175 6.3.04 Middx 6½ 9½ Surrey. This completes the SCCU's U175 programme.
  • One more result in the National Club Major, but foreign. Also a number of BCF Schools Championship results, not always foreign, added over the last few days. Keep an eye out for these. For real enthusiasts, the BCF Schools also has a detailed results page.
06 Mar 2004
  • U175 6.3.04 Sussex 9½ 6½ Essex
03 Mar 2004
  • U14/90 Herts 8½ 15½ Surrey
02 Mar 2004
01 Mar 2004
  • U150 28.2.04 Sussex 8 8 Kent
  • U125 28.2.04 Surrey 7 9 Essex
  • U100 28.2.04 Kent 5 7 Surrey; Middx 2 10 Essex. This concludes the U100 section.
29 Feb 2004
  • Open 28.2.04 Cambs 7½ 8½ Surrey; Herts 8 8 Kent.  Kent, already home and dry, fail to repeat last year's clean sweep. We think places 5-7 are resolved, and 2-4 will be resolved on the 13th March.
  • U150 28.2.04 Surrey 10½ 5½ Middx.  We're not sure anything's resolved at all in the U150, on the results we've got.
28 Feb 2004
  • Open 28.2.04 Essex 13 3 Bucks with six Bucks defaults
  • U150 28.2.04 Herts 11 5 Essex
  • BCF Schools Championship. The first result of the season in the National stage. Involving two SCCU schools. We may not always mention BCF Schools results in "What's New", especially if there's no SCCU involvement, but they will always go in and they will always attract a new date on the front page. (Same goes for National Club.)
27 Feb 2004
  • Open Forum. Dave Welch replies to Paul Buswell. The match-captain theme is getting uncomfortably close to 50 moves. Anyone for Football?
26 Feb 2004
  • Open Forum: David Fryer responds to an editorial footnote of yesterday.
25 Feb 2004
  • Open Forum, naturally, about match captains. David Fryer contributes, and your Webmaster is confuted by a correspondent from California!
23 Feb 2004
  • Open Forum: still on the match-captain theme. Chris Howell joins in, and Scott Fraser and Gary Kenworthy come back. Your Webmaster regrets he's thrown in an opinion or two of his own. How come this subject never came up before?
  • National Club Major. The last result of the preliminary round, involving two SCCU teams
22 Feb 2004
  • U175 21.2.04 Middx 5½ 10½ Essex. See yesterday for commentary.
21 Feb 2004
  • U175 21.2.04 (bare match score) Middx 5½ 10½ Essex. Essex, by our calculations, are Champions with a match to spare. That makes four divisions out of five (and counting?) which have been won with a match to spare. The difference, in the case of the U175, is that all the positions are decided with a match to spare as well. Put your feet up on 6th March, lads!
  • Open Forum: the match-captain debate continues. Paul Buswell and Kevin Thurlow again, and Gary Kenworthy joins in.
20 Feb 2004
  • Open Forum: still on match captains. Kevin Thurlow comes back briefly, and Bernard Cafferty and Scott Fraser contribute. Stephen Hart broadens the debate somewhat.
  • You saw it here first. BCF Management Board Meeting 7.2.04: a report
18 Feb 2004
17 Feb 2004
  • Open Forum: Kevin Thurlow and Jonathan Melsom take up Paul Buswell's match-captain theme
  • National Club Minor results for round 1, and round-2 pairings. Plus one Major result, foreign but we'll have to knock them out some time.
  • On the BCF site: Wellington International. It is not our policy to duplicate results that are on other sites already.
16 Feb 2004
  • U14/90 15.2.04 Hampshire 9½ 14½ Coulsdon CF; Coulsdon CF 17 7 Hampshire. (Yes, two matches in one day. But they weren't really at different venues.)
  • Open Forum: Paul Buswell on the role of the match captain
15 Feb 2004
  • U125 14.2.04 Sussex 8½ 7½ Surrey. According to our calculations this means Middx are Champions with a match to spare - their first SCCU league title since 1994-5.
  • National Club. SCCU side beats foreigner in Major; two SCCU sides meet in Minor.
  • BCF Schools Championship: the first-round draw in the National Stage
14 Feb 2004
  • U125 14.2.04 Middx 9 7 Herts
  • Note that U100 7.2.04 Essex-Kent, which we gave four days ago, has changed. The scores were right but the players weren't.
  • Coulsdon Rapidplay 14.2.04
12 Feb 2004
  • The U14/90 has been less dormant than we thought. We now have 25.1.04 Richmond Juniors 20½ 3½ Hampshire, and 31.1.04 Coulsdon CF 5 19 Richmond Juniors. You'll have to scroll down a bit for them. While we were about it we corrected the Richmond contact details (same page).
  • BCF Schools Championship: all the Zone winners and runners-up. National stage is imminent.
  • BCF website now has the new Grand Prix Rules, and we still don't understand them.
10 Feb 2004
  • U100 7.2.04 Essex 7½ 4½ Kent. If our arithmetic is right, Essex are Champions with a match to spare.
  • U14/90 7.2.04 Surrey 12½ 11½ Essex
  • National Club Major. One result, with SCCU involvement
09 Feb 2004
  • U100 7.2.04 Middx 6 6 Surrey
08 Feb 2004
  • U175 7.2.04 Middx 6 10 Sussex
07 Feb 2004
  • U175 7.2.04 Surrey 5½ 10½ Essex
  • If you're wondering about the updates of the last day or two, they have been to the BCF Schools page. There's another today. Fresh results in the BCF Schools and National Club will always attract a changed date on the front page, but may not be mentioned in What's New.
03 Feb 2004
02 Feb 2004
  • Open 31.1.04 Surrey 5½ 10½ Sussex

20 Jan 2004
  • U150 17.1.04 Middx 7½ 8½ Sussex
19 Jan 2004
  • Webmaster's second note. BT have fixed my telephone, quicker than I dared hope. If the Website remains silent now it will be because it has nothing to say. It has nothing much to say at the moment, apart from a revised U125 date Surrey-Essex (see Fixtures page).
18 Jan 2004
  • Webmaster's note. My phone has been out of order since yesterday morning. Expected time of repair: some time this week, with luck. Until then I cannot easily send or receive emails or update this site. I'll let you know when I'm back, and in the meantime any uploads will be the result of special measures (as today's are).
You can still phone me. Incoming calls are being re-routed via my mobile. At landline rates, of course.
  • U150 17.1.04 Herts 11 5 Surrey; Kent 6½ 9½ Essex

  • U14/90. Kent have withdrawn. To judge from the results we've received so far, nearly everyone has.
