BCF NATIONAL SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP
2004-2005

CHAMPIONS 2004-5
CHAMPIONSHIP: NOTTINGHAM HS A
PLATE: HAMPTON SCHOOL

The competition got under way on schedule in October, once again with a reduced entry. There was not even a Scotland / N Ireland Zone this year. Scotland mustered exactly one entry, and the four Irish entries did not suffice to make up a playable combined Zone.

It is completed, and full results are below. Nottingham HS set a record by qualifying for the last four in both Plate and Championship. The Semi-finals and Finals were played Saturday / Sunday 2-3 July 2005 at Quorn Hall International Educational Centre, Quorn, Leics. This is a rather splendid country house whose early history we don't know, though it is now under the administration of Leicestershire County Council.
Dave Welch, BCF Chief Arbiter, officiated as always. BCF CEO Roy Heppinstall was in attendance, together with acting Junior Director Cyril Johnson.

Teams and results from the Local Zones are further down the page. The competition goes back to 1957, and no one is sure whether the achievement of Haberdashers Askes in winning two different Zones is unique. It probably is. Update 5.5.06. It isn't. We hear from an ex-pupil of Wyggeston Grammar School (Leicester) that they did it in 1969. It has also been done since by Nottingham High School.

NATIONAL STAGE
This is a summary. There is also a detailed results page.
Average ages are in brackets. The older team, to win, must beat its opponents by a number of points at least equal to the age difference in years (taken as a whole number by truncation). If it does not, it loses. Board count and elimination apply only when there is no age handicap. An asterisk means win on handicap, or board count or elimination, and failing an asterisk the team with more points wins.
