  • Comment page.
18 Jul 2006
  • Open Forum. Jonathan Melsom and Scott Freeman contribute on Mobile Phones, and Paul Buswell adds a note to Roger de Coverly's letter. Joffrey Lebon writes on a different matter entirely.
  • National Club 2006-7. An important announcement from the ECF Home Director
17 Jul 2006
  • Open Forum won't lie down. Well, why should it? Neil Graham, Neill Cooper, David Sedgwick, Phil Makepeace and Roger de Coverly write on recent topics. Mostly it's responses, and counter-responses, on Ken Norman's revived Mobile Phone theme.
16 Jul 2006

03 Jul 2006
02 Jul 2006

  • Open Forum. Chris Majer answers Chris Torrero, and Sean Hewitt takes up a point about grading.
01 Jul 2006
  • ECF-Stage Finals 1.7.06. Rather upstaging the bottom entry in today's list, we have the bare match scores of all the Finals.
  • BCF & ECF Extraordinary General meetings 24.6.06. A report.
  • Open Forum. Chris Torrero writes again, briefly, in response to an Editorial footnote.
  • With the County Finals imminent we have at last got up to date with the Semi-finals. See ECF-Stage page.
26 Jun 2006
23 Jun 2006
  • SCCU AGM 17.6.06: a report
  • Open Forum. Gavin Strachan and Jonathan Rogers add to the familiar topic, in one case with significant digressions.
  • Your Webmaster apologises for being a day or three out of date. He's caught up now. He has been on a Grading trip.
19 Jun 2006

18 Jun 2006
  • U175 17.6.06 Sussex* 8 8 Essex
  • Open Forum. Chris Torrero joins in on the familiar topic

  • Open Forum. Peter Farr and Jeff Goldberg write on a familiar and seasonal topic, but in different vein.
14 Jun 2006
13 Jun 2006
12 Jun 2006
  • Open SF 11.6.06 Essex 9½ 6½ Sussex; Kent 9 7 Yorks
  • U100 SF 11.6.06 (bare match score) Cheshire & N Wales 4½ 7½ Kent
  • Plus other, non-SCCU, results. We notice Devon U175 have, for the second year running, reached the Final without playing a match all season. It's not their fault no one else enters in the WECU, or that they keep getting byes in the quarter-final then winning the semi-final by default.
  • National Club. The last of the Major semi-finals. With SCCU involvement again.
11 Jun 2006
  • Open SF 11.6.06 (bare match score) Essex 9½ 6½ Sussex
  • Minor Counties SF (bare match score) Leics 5½ 10½ Surrey.
  • Plus the other (non-SCCU) Minor result, and non-SCCU results in the U150 and U100. See the ECF-Stage page.
  • National Club Minor & Minor Plate. Two semi-finals, both with SCCU involvement
05 Jun 2006
03 Jun 2006
  • SCCU U14/90 Jamboree at Amherst CP School, Sevenoaks 3.6.06. 1 Surrey West 19/24; 2-3 Kent, Sussex 14½... Nine teams competed. We hope to publish detailed results tomorrow.
02 Jun 2006
31 May 2006
  • SCCU Open fixtures 2006-7. David Smith, SCCU County Match Controller, publishes his provisional list. It is amendable by agreement between any pair of Counties, provided the amendments are notified to David in advance. (And to the Website as well, if you want to make things easy for us.)
  • ECF-Stage QF County results. Got them! The outstanding results, from the non-SCCU Counties, have all been secured by means fair or foul and we think we're up to date.
23 May 2006
  • U175 QF 20.5.06 Lancs 9½ 6½ Middx
This seems to complete our detailed SCCU coverage. Bare scores elsewhere are still trickling in.
  • Open Forum. To round off the weekend's matches, John Cannon sends a rueful comment from a Sussex viewpoint.
22 May 2006
  • U175 QF 21.5.06 Essex 10½ 5½ Beds
  • U150 QF 20.5.06 Essex 7½ 8½ Warwicks
  • U125 QF 20.5.06 Middx 10½ 5½ Staffs
  • U100 QF 20.5.06 Essex 6 6 *Notts
We think we have now published detailed results of all but one of the QFs involving SCCU teams. We don't even know who won that one. Bare match scores elsewhere are patchy.
  • ECF U18 Counties Teams Championship 20.5.06
21 May 2006

  • U125 QF 20.5.06 (bare match score) Middx 10½ 5½ Staffs
  • U100 QF 13.5.06 Salop 4 8 Kent; also (bare match score 20.5.06) Essex 6 6 *Notts
  • Plus other, non-SCCU, results
  • Kent Finals day 21.5.06
20 May 2006
  • Counties Open QF 20.5.06 (bare match score) Salop 6 10 Essex
  • ECF Directors. Cyril Johnson is acting CEO while Roy Heppinstall is indisposed. Robert Richmond has resigned as Finance Director. The ECF website has quietly substituted "vacant" for Robert's name in the list of Directors, and has otherwise said nothing. You should not be hearing this from us.
18 May 2006
  • National Club Minor Plate. The semi-final which had to be won by an SCCU team has been, and we can only wait to see whether the other one will be.
16 May 2006
  • U175 QF. Only a non-result, but we now have one SCCU team in the semi-finals.
  • Open Forum. Sean wanted to come back and we said Moratorium, but then Kevin Thurlow joined in so we relented.
15 May 2006
  • National Club Major. SCCU team reaches Final.
  • Open Forum. Jeff replies to Sean replying to Jeff replying to Sean, and we declare a moratorium on this topic until someone else joins in. Don't think your Webmaster wasn't tempted.
11 May 2006
  • ECF Game Fee 2006-7. We add an important note to the Game Fee decision that Council made last month.
08 May 2006
  • Open Forum. And Sean Hewitt replies to Jeff Goldberg.

  • Open Forum. Jeff Goldberg replies to Sean Hewitt's letter of four days ago.
05 May 2006
  • The long-awaited QPF ruling is in, giving U100 25.2.06 Surrey 5½ 6½ Essex. The League tables are final.
  • SCCU President. Readers should be made aware, if they were not, that SCCU President Roy Heppinstall has been unwell for some time and may be outside the chess loop for a while yet. We wish him a speedy return to full activity.
03 May 2006
  • Open Forum. Sean Hewitt raises a question about junior Game Fee.
  • The ECF Schools Championship is down to the semi-finals. Only three of the eight survivors are from the SCCU!

17 Apr 2006

  • It's come! Our ECF Yearbook 2006 arrived this morning. We have no information on the timing for future years.
04 Apr 2006
01 Apr 2006
31 Mar 2006
  • ECF Council meeting 22.4.06. The papers came yesterday. A brief rundown of what's on the Agenda.
30 Mar 2006
  • SCCU U180 & U135 Jamborees this Sunday 2nd April are cancelled for lack of support. Respectively, two entries and three.
  • Kent Schools League 2005-6: some results
27 Mar 2006
  • National Club Major. Two more results, with some (unsuccessful) SCCU involvement
26 Mar 2006
  • U100 25.3.06 Middx 5½ 6½ Essex. The last match of the season, and Essex take the U100 title. The one loose end of the season is in the U100, as it happens. The QPF claim from a month back is still not resolved. It affects the match points, but not the positions.
  • There are also one or two new National Club results.
22 Mar 2006
  • SCCU U14/90 2005-6: update. This competition will happen, if not on the intended scale. See the U14/90 page.
  • National Club Major. Some more results
  • Open Forum. Jonathan Rogers comments on the recent amendments to the Counties Championships draw
20 Mar 2006

  • U150 18.3.06 Surrey 9½ 6½ Kent; Sussex 8 8 Essex
  • U100 18.3.06 Kent 7½ 4½ Surrey
  • The U150 is complete (see League tables page). The U100 nominations wait on next weekend's match and/or the result of a QPF claim from three weeks ago, but at least it's certain which two teams will get them.
16 Mar 2006
13 Mar 2006
12 Mar 2006
  • U175 11.3.06 Essex 10 6 Sussex. Also (bare match score) Surrey 4 12 Middx.
  • U125 11.3.06 Kent 9 7 Herts; Sussex 8 8 Middx
  • The U175 is complete, and the U125 Championship decided. If the U125 Championship had to go to board count, it has chosen the best of ways to do it. We hope we've done our sums right in the League tables page.
  • ECF-Stage draw (Open only) has changed again. Once again there are implications for SCCU teams. Today's draw is final.
  • SCCU U18 Jamboree 19th March 2006 is cancelled. There was only one entry.
11 Mar 2006
  • U175 11.3.06 (bare match score) Essex 10 6 Sussex. We believe this gives Essex the SCCU U175 title.
09 Mar 2006
  • Please note the SCCU Treasurer's new contact details (in Who's Who). He's moved to Dorset.
08 Mar 2006
  • SCCU U180 and U135 Jamborees 2nd April 2006. David Smith, Controller, writes that NO entries have been received to date (though one or two Counties have expressed an intention of entering). He urges everyone planning to enter to send their entry forms - and fees - quickly to avoid a last-minute panic. Details are in the Jamborees page.
07 Mar 2006
01 Mar 2006
  • U100 25.2.06 Kent 7½ 4½ Middx
  • The ECF-Stage draw in the Counties Championships is today revised by the addition of two MCCU teams in the Open and Minor Counties. This has implications for SCCU teams.
27 Feb 2006
  • Open Forum. Mark Attree takes up the Grading theme raised by Sean Hewitt ten days ago
  • Found Property! We are informed by Kent that a pair of spectacles was left behind after the U100 match Kent v Essex at Swanscombe 1st October 2005. Efforts to find the owner have not availed. If they were yours and you would like them back, contact Alan Evans 01634 220444
26 Feb 2006
  • Open 25.2.06 Kent 10 6 Surrey
  • U150 25.2.06 Kent 7 9 Sussex
  • U100 25.2.06 (bare match score) Kent 7½ 4½ Middx
25 Feb 2006
  • Open 25.2.06 Sussex 13 3 Herts with six Herts defaults. We think this settles the finishing order in the Open.
  • U150 25.2.06 Herts 8 8 Surrey
  • U100 25.2.06 Surrey 5½ 5½ Essex, with one Surrey draw claim
24 Feb 2006
  • SCCU Individual Championship 2006-7 and British Championship Qualifying Places 2007. The Union has places in its gift, open to all congresses in the SCCU area. Decisions will be made 10th March 2006. Congresses desiring places should apply to the Secretary Richard Haddrell rjh@sccu.ndo.co.uk not later than 2 pm on that date.

  • National Club Minor: all the remaining eighth-final results, plus quarter-final draw
19 Feb 2006
  • National Club Major is down to the quarter-finals in the Championship proper. The result that occasioned this was not SCCU-friendly.
  • We mentioned eight days ago, in the Comment page, that we had heard the ECF Board planned a meeting with the Unions. It was true. We didn't know the date, but we do now. The Unions have just received thirteen days notice of it, for Saturday 4th March in Birmingham.
17 Feb 2006
  • Open Forum. Sean Hewitt queries some aspects of the ECF grading system.
15 Feb 2006
  • Yesterday's ECF-stage draw is already updated with the names of some early MCCU qualifiers. We'll add other qualifiers as they emerge.
14 Feb 2006
  • The ECF-stage Counties Championships draw was announced yesterday. SCCU has three nominations in the Open and U175 (but thankfully only one in the Minor Counties, and we think we know who will get it).
12 Feb 2006
  • U150 11.2.06 Essex 8 8 Kent; Sussex 9½ 6½ Herts
11 Feb 2006
  • ECF Schools Championship has reached the National stage. We give all the Zonal winners and runners-up, and the first-round draw. From now on we shall publish results as they come in. [Note. This is an ECF service, not an SCCU one. The controller uses the SCCU site because he has quick access to it. Results appear on the ECF site as well, though not quite so promptly.]
  • Our all-snail sister publication the SCCU Bulletin published an Editorial the other day which we rather agree with. All right, then, your Webmaster wrote it. We reproduce it in the Comment page.
05 Feb 2006
  • U175 4.2.06 Sussex 11 5 Surrey. By our reckoning this settles the U175 ECF-stage nominees (Essex and Sussex), but not their finishing order. (Forgot to say earlier, but we think the SCCU Open title was settled a week ago.)
04 Feb 2006
  • U175 4.2.06 Middx 5½ 10½ Essex
03 Feb 2006
  • Open 28.1.06 Herts v Surrey. One of the game results has been queried. Few details yet, but see the brief note under the match.

17 Dec 2005
15 Dec 2005
  • Golders Green Rapidplay 10.12.05
