County Cup Lewisham I* 3 3 Maidstone I. All games drawn, and winner was the team that had black on odd. It's the rule in Kent, but had never been invoked before. It isn't silly. Other competitions employ the same rule, and have invoked it twice to our knowledge.

PAUL WATSON
1943-2005
Paul Watson, for so long a mainstay of the Sussex CA, collapsed aged 62 in a shop in Brighton on Tuesday 8th November 2005 and was dead on arrival at hospital.
Paul's service as Sussex I Match Captain was so legendary that it comes as a shock to realise he had been County Secretary for even longer, and already a County captain before that. He was Second Team Captain - not to say Tournament Controller as well - from 1977 to 1981, and from 1979 was also County Secretary, a post which he was to hold continuously until his death. His stint as First Team Captain ran from 1985 to 2004 without a single default, and the loyalty of his small band of strong players was very notable. When he finally passed the job on he immediately took over the reins of the Third Team instead, and also stood in for a while as Second Team Captain while the incumbent was unwell. He was playing on top board for the Third Team, still as its Captain, three days before his death.
The County will find it hard to replace Paul. Officers with his energy and dedication are rare. He had also for many years been a driving force behind his club, The Holt. He received the President's Award for Services to Chess in 2004.

Paul's funeral, on 18th November at Woodvale Crematorium, Brighton, was attended by family from across the globe. And, among others, by a large and overflowing number of chess players from Sussex and beyond. The SCCU Secretary and Tournament Controller were present, as was the English Chess Federation's CEO Roy Heppinstall.
