KENT SUMMER QUICKPLAY 2010
This is a league for teams of four. Each match is a four-round (old fashioned) Scheveningen, 30 minutes per round, in which everyone plays one game against each member of the opposing team. So 16 games per match. In each game, the 30 minutes are split between the players according to the difference between their grades. Three minutes against 27, for differences of 80 points or more (and they happen). No matches went 16 - 0 this year, but that happens as well.
     This year's event: 17 teams, in four league groups, followed by: Semi-finals Folkestone 7½ 8½ Beckenham & Bromley; Charlton A 11 5 Maidstone. Final 7.10.10: Beckenham & Bromley 6 10 Charlton A

FORTHCOMING FRIENDLY MATCH
Richard Woodfield writes:
As part of the annual nationwide Heritage Open Days weekend in September, Tunbridge Wells and Hastings chess clubs are recreating a historic chess fixture between the two clubs, first played in 1907. In the early years this fixture was truly impressive, featuring 50 players a side. For the 1912 match the top board for Tunbridge Wells was no less than the legendary Frank Marshall, US champion from 1909 to 1936. The silver shield for which the two clubs competed was raised by one-shilling subscriptions from club members. To mark this history the two clubs will be playing an exhibition chess match, over four rounds Rapidplay, on Sunday 12 September in the Corn Exchange on the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells between 14:00 and 17:00. There will be an exhibition of historical material from Hastings' archives, including cartoons of famous chess players by the renowned Daily Mail cartoonist, "Mac". Spectators are welcome at the match.
Webmaster's footnote 13.9.10. And they came. It was 12 boards, and we regret to report that Hastings won 33½ - 14½. Most of the Tunbridge Wells points were scored by the four guests from Maidstone. (It was Tunbridge Wells & District.)
