UNGRADED PLAYERS
CLEARED FOR SCCU COUNTY MATCHES

2015-16

Match Captains, especially those newly appointed for the coming season, are reminded that the grading-limited divisions are for players with a current (that is, August 2015) published grade appropriate for the division in which they are to appear. Rapidplay grades count if the player has no Standardplay grade. Players without a published grade may play, but only if cleared in advance with David Smith, County Match Controller, by their match captain. Captains must give as much information as possible, including details of previous grades and recent results as known. Reasonable notice is needed so the Controller can make an informed decision.

Clearance to play for (say) an U120 team is valid also for higher teams. Estimated grades shown are for information only. They have no official significance and must not be taken as determining a player's position in the team.

The Controller may withdraw clearance if he ceases to think it justified. A match captain himself must cease to use an ungraded player, clearance notwithstanding, if he comes to think that the player's strength is not, after all, below the limit for the division. This is an important difference between clearance on the one hand, and published grades on the other. A player with a published grade below the limit for a division may play whatever his strength.

The Controller gives notice that clearance becomes void if the player acquires a published grade in the January 2016 list. January grades do not supersede published August grades, but they supersede estimates and clearance. They come into effect 7 days after publication, or earlier if the team captain so chooses.

Note 27.1.16. The January 2016 grades were published yesterday 26th January, and most of the cleared players now have published grades (see last column below). Mostly, the new grades are not over the original clearance limits and their owners may continue to represent their teams as graded players in their own right. Two players, however, have new grades over the limit. Their clearance is rescinded, but they may play in higher divisions as graded players.
A minority of players are still ungraded, and their clearance stands.
