COUNTY MATCHES
BCF STAGE

We have tried, with less than 100% success, to give results in full for matches involving SCCU teams. Plus bare results for all other matches. SCCU matches in red are in full further down the page; the ones in blue are the ones we haven't had. There's even an "other" match in red, for the Finals. The Finals are all there.
"This is final, as far as we can tell." Said that on the 27th June, but the corrections have kept dribbling in. Latest amendment 14th July is not so much a correction as an addition: a complete semi-final match from the 6th June. Better late than never, Herts.
Some comment about the Minor Counties rules appears in the Comment page.

(Your Webmaster went along for a day out. Lovely setting, nice little town, beautiful weather, pity about Kent's result.)

There was speculation that a vacation-hit Cambs might fall short of their usual strength. They didn't. They even came up with a 215 who hadn't so far played for them this season. Or at all, probably. Kent, outgraded by 10 points or so per board, must still have been disappointed not to improve on their Cambs result in the SCCU stage.

Bucks have been a revelation this year. But Herts (just) reversed the SCCU-stage result when it mattered. There was never more than one point in it. At 7½-7½ the Bucks bd 2, with less than five minutes on both clocks, had a perpetual. But Bucks needed a win...

Essex mc: "Last year, Devon gave us our toughest match. They've done it again." It was tough, with everything depending on the last (bd 4) game, the last game in the Finals and spectators falling over one another, and Essex needing a win.
1 The Essex bd 14 says his opponent was C Bellers 156, not RC Towers 152 as originally published. No confirmation yet, but we've changed it. He ought to know.

Well, it was a Final. Warwicks won on board count. The U150 looks to be anyone's next year. You'll have noticed that both Finalists had knocked out SCCU teams on board count in the semi-finals.

Corrected version 30.6.99: match score unaffected. We had the results the other way round on boards 3 and 12. (They were incorrectly posted on the day.) In addition the Cambs board 8 was not Steve Hart as originally published: he was non-playing captain. Thank you to Chris Norton for these corrections, and Cyril Johnson has confirmed them.

"Please note large number of ungraded players in Shropshire side. I understand that none of these players had been given prior permission to play." - Essex mc.
It turned out that only two Shropshire players were ungraded, though their match captain seems to have thought otherwise. Don't know which two they were, but the score after penalties is 8½ - 1½ so presumably they were two who lost.
