The first clearly identified SCCU Championship tournament was held at Salisbury (then, of course, in the Southern Counties) in September 1898. However an SCCU tournament in 1896 "at Clifton"1 and a second in 1897 at Southampton, both won by HE Atkins, seem to have been for the Union (Amateur) Championship in all but name. They were preceded, in August 1895, by an Amateur tournament at Hastings alongside the International. But this event was under the auspices of the SCCU and the British Chess Association jointly and, unlike the later events, was not restricted to SCCU players.
After the 1898 event we have no information until 1937. We have Ladies Champions only for 1959-63, but suspect there will have been others.
1 Clearly the Bristol Clifton, since the organiser had a Bristol address.

We've gone as far as we can with the in-house records for the Boys and Girls Championships. The extant trophies, being confined to new ones acquired 2000 - 2003, have not been informative. Chris Ravilious has filled a few gaps. Others remain, and we'd like to hear from anyone who can help with them. From 1978-9 we're probably complete. There was a nine-year gap, after 1988-9, during which the Championships were not held.
Tournament names like "Junior" haven't helped. Mostly we've just guessed what they meant. Another problem is that eligibility is not always clear. In 1958, for example, JF Wheeler (who won the U18 tournament) lived in Plymouth which had that very season ceased to be in the SCCU. But he may have had some other SCCU qualification. He may or may not, therefore, have been awarded the title. (Arguably, if he was born in Plymouth while it was in the Union he would have qualified by birth anyway. This is not an argument your Webmaster would care to defend too hard, but your Webmaster wasn't on the rules committee.)
Another problem is accuracy of names. We can't help wondering, for example, whether RD Borland and RE Borland (U18 Champions 1949 and 1952) were brothers or one and the same person. Then there's an ambiguous McDonald-Ross in 1954 with no initial. Please tell us if you can supply amplifications or corrections.
We guess the "Boys" championships have always been open to either sex, but would welcome confirmation. Later note: Heather Richards, Under 18 Champion 1998-9, was the first girl to take any "Boys" title. From 1999-00 to 2007-8 the "Boys" titles were explicitly open to either sex and styled simply "SCCU Under X Championship". However the 2008 AGM resolved that in future the Boys' and Girls' titles should be separate, for consistency witth the London Junior titles awarded at the same event. There is no longer an "SCCU Under X Champion"; only a Boys' Champion and a Girls' Champion.
"49" in the Date column means 1948-9.

SCCU GIRLS CHAMPIONS

We are fairly sure that Margaret Wood of Sutton Coldfield would not have had SCCU qualifications when she won the U18 tournament in 1954. The Margaret Wood who came second (there were certainly two Margaret Woods) was the only other competitor. The Margaret Wood who won in 1956 was, we think, the Sutton Coldfield one.
