Kent qualify for the BCF Final on the 27th March, and Essex for the Minor Counties Final (same day).

This one went right to the wire. Kent and Essex, with 11 games finished, were of course playing each other in the twelfth. It was board 12, as it happens. Kent needed to win, and did.

An odd feature of the day was the Berks defaults. Five Berks players travelled together by train. They left Guildford station together. One arrived at the venue in good time; three were an hour and twenty minutes late; and the fifth never arrived at all. (Yes, they did trace him, but it took some phone calls. Turned out he'd got so hopelessly lost and/or late that he went home.)

Next year's SCCU event will be on the 4th March 2000 at a venue in Essex (the only county to have offered). The 2001 event (3rd March) already has offers from Herts and Kent.
