SCCU JUNIOR MATCHES: U14/U90

A new competition this season, and it's nice to have a decent entry.  (Are you there, Herts and Kent?)  Teams are in three groups: Essex/Middx; Surrey/Sussex; and Berks/Bucks/Oxon. Each group is double-round.  Double-double-round, if you see what we mean.

Rate of play is 30 in 45 min, plus QPF 15/15; except that players not keeping score forfeit their extra 15 min. Qualifying grades are Standardplay.  That's the rule.  However, games will be Rapidplay graded.  (It says here.  Seems odd to us, as well.)  Organisers have supplied grades for only three of the teams, and we've looked the others up. Don't expect this every time.  It's unreliable anyway, even for the legible players.  Grades are more dependable when supplied by match captains, who tend to know who their players are. One organiser has gone to the trouble of looking up some players' grading-codes and telling us them. Next time, it would help if he'd go one step further and tell us the grades as well.
     The grades we've supplied are from the master list and may or may not be in the published one. Unpublished grades do not count for eligibility. A few of the unpublished ones, but only a few, have been asterisked.

How to read these results
Each match is double-round.  In round 1 the pairings are as printed; in round 2 the home players swop places on boards 1-2, 3-4 etc.  Or, if you prefer, the away players do.  The scores by a player's name are his; to find the name of his second-round opponent, adjust vertically.
     Match captains wrote all the names out again for round 2.  Two of them swopped the counties left-right as well, to confuse.  We've unswopped and compressed, partly to save typing, and partly because your Editor actually finds it easier to read that way!
     Colours indicated in three matches only, where one side had white on all boards in round 1 and black on all boards in round 2.  Believe there's no rule about this, but if that's the way they're doing it, it may explain the left-right swoppings.
     An asterisk by a county name means the result has come from that side. Where there is no asterisk, it has come from Nigel Dennis.

1 Bd 1: The * is on the score sheet, twice, but we can’t find the explanation of what it means. Bit like those car advertisements. [Aha! just found out (15.12.98). It means "captain".] Hope we’ve got things right at the bottom end. It looks, from the score sheet, as though both sides had two spare players, and the Oxon ones continued as reserves in round 2 but the Bucks ones moved into the team. Anyway, that’s how we’ve typed it.
